Jefferson County is seeking to hire a Real Property Appraiser. Real Property Appraisers are responsible for appraising residential and commercial properties to establish a fair market value for ad valorem tax purposes according to state and federal guidelines. Appraisers gather information by inspecting property to determine the value of the property for tax purposes. A significant amount of judgement is used during the assessment process and Appraisers must follow strict adherence to set policies, procedures and State law. The work is performed throughout the county and requires the employee to travel to various locations in order to perform the appraisals. Work is performed under the direction of a supervisor and is reviewed for completeness and adherence to policies and procedures. Typical job duties include performing administrative duties such as writing reports, maintaining files, drafting mail correspondence, and communicating information to maintain efficient departmental operations. Assisting taxpayers with various issues related to real property, assisting the public and government agencies in accessing real property data, communicating with various entities to obtain and/or exchange property related information, drafting and mailing correspondence to communicate property appraisal information, completing valuations and/or assessments of real properties on behalf of the Board of Equalization to determine the amount of property tax owed by property owners. Gathering evidence and reviewing documentation related to citizen protests of assessed property values and/or related court cases. Inspecting real properties and related documentation to evaluate construction, condition, special features, and functional design. Examining the type and location of nearby services to evaluate their impact on property values. Taking property measurements using tape measure and miter gauge to provide information to be used for property appraisals. The job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing and may involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as during regular field visits to external places of business, residence, or construction worksites. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
